Locating the leak

The first step is to locate the source of the leak. In most cases the problem can be found by taking a close look at the roof, especially the areas where leaks commonly occur. Occasionally we will need to come inside and see exactly where the damage is located. On rare occasions we run across a situation where the water penetrates the roofing material and then runs along a board, a wire, or something stored in the attic dripping on the ceiling some distance from where the actual leak is at.

Fixing the Leak

Before making repairs an evaluation of the entire roofing system needs be made. If the roofing system is at or near the end of life it may not be financially wise to spend money doing repairs. It may be time to replace the entire roof. One of our roof professionals will help with this evaluation. You need to make this decision based on facts from a professional. Most of the roofing problems that we are asked to look at can be repaired and will provide many years of service.

If the decision is made to repair the leak this should be done as soon as possible. Water that gets under the roofing material does not dry out. The continual dampness causes the decking material and structural wood to rot and promotes the growth of mildew.
